Glendalough AC celebrate successful 'maiden season'

Our club has had a very impressive first cross-country season with high levels of participation and even some medals as our members turned out for the Wicklow Novice Cross-country in Avondale and the Wicklow Intermediate in Roundwood. Claire O'Callaghan was also picked to represent Sli Cualann in the Leinster Intermediate where she could celebrate team Bronze.

Wicklow Novice

Claire O'Callaghan, Yvonne Brennan and Donna Quinn finished 4th, 5th and 6th in the ladies race to take the Team Silver medals and the first cross-country medals won by our club!

For our men it was more of a learning experience as they finished 6th out of 6 teams (!) led home by Amidou Dembele who was an impressive 10th overall. The race was a cross-country debut for Barry O'Neill, Colm Kenna and Derek Cullen. The entire ladies' team competed over cross-country for the first time as well making the medals even more impressive.

Wicklow Intermediate

Claire O'Callaghan went two better in this race to secure the individual Silver medal beaten only by Sile O'Byrne. Although Yvonne and Donna got outsprinted on the line they finished 6th and 7th which was enough to secure another Team Silver medal for our ladies. Our men fared only slightly better finishing 5th out of 6 teams but it must be taken into account that 6th placed Ashford did not have enough runners to complete. Amidou Dembele led the men's team once again but a 5 km personal best at Rathfarnham the week before left him jaded and he was slightly disappointed to manage only 12th position. Keith Mulvey had his cross-country debut at this race.

Leinster Intermediate

Claire O'Callaghan became our first representative in the Sli Cualann colours as she joined the team for the Leinster Intermediate at JFK Park in Wexford. On an extremely wet day she equitted herself well to finish 14th overall. Sli Cualann where led home by Aisling Kirwan (11) followed by Sile O'Byrne (12), Claire (14) and Anne-Marie Kenny (15). This tightly packed team secured Team Silver medals (Claire's third set of the season) for Sli Cualann (one point off the gold!).
