Club Championship

The Club Championship has run in various formats since 2016. The general format consists of a number of races – some club races and some ‘real’ races – being picked as ‘counters’. The best performers across the year in these counters are crowned Club Champions. Generally, the club championship includes races on all terrains (track, road, cross, hill, trail) to ensure this prize is won by an ‘all-rounder’.

History of winners

6 men have won the championship with Angus the first to win it twice. 3 women have won the women’s championship but the last four have been won by Donna Quinn.

Notes: No woman met the minimum number of races to complete in 2019 and 2023.

CLUB SUMMER LEAGUE 2020

A special Summer League was held in 2020 to replace the many cancelled races that year. This league was run in a Handicap format and won by Aoife Joyce with Rene Borg the first man (2nd overall).

The 2024 Club Championship will consist of 16 races, provisionally set as below (red means no date is confirmed for this event yet) and made up of 6 road and track races, 6 hill and trail races, and 4 cross-country races.

CURRENT CLUB CHAMPIONSHIP RULES

  • 16 races running from January to October Club champion is decided then.
  • Your 5 best results count (i.e. you can ‘miss 7’)
  • Each discipline (cross, hill, road, track, trail) will be represented by at least two events
  • Your best 5 will automatically include 3 of the 5 disciplines. ensuring a mix of challenges for the winner whilst you can still avoid running a type of race that doesn’t suit your personal goals at all.
  • Ahead of each race, we’ll check who is signed up. If less than 3 club runners are signed up, the fixture will not count and will be replaced with the next suitable event. If no suitable fixture can be found, the championship will be reduced.

POINTS SCORING

  • The ‘Keswick AC’ system like previous years: first across the line get’s 100 points. Everyone else get’s 100 points minus the difference in percent between their time and the first club runners time (i.e. if you are 1.8% behind the first club runner, you get 98.2 points)
  • A separate women’s score is calculated for the women’s championship. There’s no minimum competitors for the women’s championship (only for the overall)
  • Maximum points you can get is therefore 500 (having 5 wins as your best 5 scores)
  • In the case of a tie, the first tie-breaker will be ‘head to head’ record and then number of wins

RACE SELECTION CRITERIA

Criteria for a race being selected is always two-folds: 1) must be local (county Wicklow) and 2) preference is given to county championship events.

We currently await confirmation of final schedule for the Wicklow Track and Field and Road Champs.
