RACE REPORT: Wicklow Road Championships, Everest Marathon, Road Win and Packed May Round-Up

A truly jam-packed report sees us start with yesterday’s major event at the Wicklow Athletics Road Championship, this year held in Avondale. We then pivot back to May for ten more results, including a race win on the roads and Keith Mulvey’s epic adventure at Everest.

Results from our own fund-raiser Lap of the Gap and the Glen to Glen Half-marathon were omitted from this report due to forgetfulness on part of the organiser! They will be included in the next report.

WICKLOW ROAD CHAMPIONSHIP 2026

The club has competed in the Wicklow Road Championship every year since its inception in 2015. Across 11 editions, Glendalough AC has now posted 108 results, averaging almost 10 runners per event, with a high of 14 runners in 2023.

Aaron Cullen produced the standout performance of the night, lowering his own PB and the overall club record from 16:44 to 16:16. Gavin Kennedy also improved his previous mark, knocking five seconds off his standing 18:23 PB. Paul Duffy, our second man home on the night, took a PB by the slimmest of margins, shaving one second off his 2025 championship time to finish in 17:56.

Aaron looks to the time – and yes it really is 3:16 min/km pace!

There were individual medals for Donna Quinn, who took Silver F45, Paul Duffy, who won Silver M45, and Christina Byrne, who claimed Bronze F70. The M50 team also took Bronze through the efforts of Graham Bushe, Angus Tyner and Jimmy Cullen.

The strategy to focus on the masters category, rather than having our fastest masters support Aaron Cullen in the senior men’s team, unfortunately backfired. With our top four runners, we would have won Bronze in the senior men’s category. Instead, the masters men finished 5th, while our masters women’s team finished 4th.

KEADEEN

On the same evening in West Wicklow, Alan Kennedy and Eoin Phelan continued to be nearly ever-present racers on this year’s IMRA calendar, taking on the 10.1 km race at Keadeen.

ARDGILLAN

We move back to the 20th of May for the Ardgillan race, where Aaron Cullen finished a superb 2nd behind former Irish international Barry Minnock. Eoin Phelan, of course, raced as well.

COOLEY HALF-MARATHON

Three days later, further north, we had a surprisingly big contingent racing at the Cooley Half-Marathon. It was a welcome outing for Johnny Conway, who lives local to the race. Johnny was our third club man home after the in-form Ian Bromley and Stephen Kennedy, with Anne Bromley our first and only female competitor home.

SUGAR BOWL

The Sugar Bowl Leinster League race was next, and Graham Bushe had offered up yet another challenging route for the Wednesday enthusiasts to feast on, with plenty of ups and downs. Alan Kennedy was first home for the club and 2nd M55, while, as so often, Loraine Creane was only seconds behind, winning the F45 category on the night.

EVEREST MARATHON

The month of May came to a close with a truly epic adventure, as long-term member Keith Mulvey completed the iconic Everest Marathon from Base Camp at over 5,000 metres, running — sometimes! — downhill to 3,300 metres. Keith finished in just over 10.5 hours in the thin air of Nepal, in what was surely the adventure of a lifetime. Until the next one, knowing Keith.

BEARA WAY CHALLENGE

During the same weekend as the relay, Eoin Phelan once again showed he is geographically flexible, travelling to the Beara Peninsula for the 24.5 km Challenge event, which ran alongside the Beara Way Ultra and Lite events.

WEXFORD RUNNING FESTIVAL 10K

Back on the roads a few days later, Louis Byrne took a rare road race win for our men’s section when he stepped onto the top of the rostrum with a 40:09 performance at the Wexford Festival of Running in Enniscorthy.

SCARR

Our third club championship counter was on another local hill: Scarr. The race used a slight variation on previous courses but still took in the formidable murder kilometre along the wall.

Paul Duffy showed great form to lead us home, taking 2nd M45, with Graham Bushe not far behind in 3rd M55. We had a great attendance overall, with nine runners taking part in this Club Championship counter.

Coach René ran, as is now his usual, with son Cillian on the 5.1 km short course, which still inflicted the murder kilometre on legs young and old.

REPORT: Brockagh and the Wicklow Way Relay

Before we move on to the results of late May to early June we’ll wrap a bow around this year’s Wicklow Way Relay results where 26 of our club runners competed across four different teams and the Brockagh race the same week.

BROCKAGH

A counter in the club championship but with less of us in action than normal due to people resting their legs for the relay Graham Bushe led the team home and was 1st M55 (Alan Kennedy was 3rd in the same category. Richard Kieran took 3rd place in the M60.

In the short race coach Rene ran with his son Cillian again and so was Niall MacCarthy who changed distance mid-race.

WICKLOW WAY RELAY

Most were in action for the official Glendalough A and B teams and the Wicklow Wolf RC team with Loraine Creane running for coach René’s company team (Running Coach Ireland) and Grace Curham, Brendan Lawlor and Lillian Deegan running for other teams.

Tivon Tyner on leg 1

All in all  a record 45 teams were in action and we defended our long-standing record of never finishing outside the top-10 with a highly impressive 4th overall for our Glendalough Harried first team.

Laragh Legends placed 14th in the Hounds, finishing in 9:39:40 and narrowly trailing the winning Hare team by just 4 minutes 35 seconds although they were themselves in the Hound category.

In the Hares competition, Wicklow Wolfpack finished 14th of 21 Hares and 33rd of 45 teams overall, recording a time of 11:03:25.

The teams had a fun journey through with the Legends and Wolfpack quite close (28th and 31st) after leg 1. Some strong male runners on the next legs brought the Laragh Legends as high as 12th – a position they kept until leg 7. On the last two legs they dropped to first 18th then 19th. This was largely due to not being able to optimize legs vs runners due to the experience and scheduling constraints available to the team.

LEG BY LEG

While the overall result was up there with one of the best performances for the club, the individual leg by leg results were equally notable. Graham Bush impressed with a top-10 on the always competitive leg 1 and Robin Seymour was 5th on the even tougher leg 2 where Stephen Kennedy had a run good enough for many first teams to finish 11th.

The club really dominated leg 3 where Shane Keogh was first man and second overall before Loraine Creane and Rachel Wisdom arrived close together in 4th and 5th having also started only seconds apart. On leg 4, Anne Bromley had a very solid 12th place overall and was 3rd woman on the leg.

As legs grew longer, we didn’t run out of steam. Ian Bromley was 4th on leg 5 and first in his age category (a trend for many of our runners throughout the day) with Kevin Ferguson also a strong 12th and Rebecca Whineray was 5th woman on that leg running for our wolfpack.

Leg 6 was back to it’s regular 12.7 km distance, having been 10 miles last year (and more for our runners!), and that distance was a pure treat for Huw Thomas who was pushed into second only by TT Racers run-away winner. This meant we had had 5 runners in the top-5 across the legs at this stage.

On leg 7, Angus took a mighty shift running close to his own prediction in 16th on the longest leg of the day. He was also the 1st M55 on the leg while Aoife was 2nd F45 just nipping under the 2 hours.

We got out sixth top-5 placing (and 2nd runner-up spot on a leg) when Paul Duffy cruised the team home in 2nd beaten only by Clane AC’s Terry Shanley. Fiona Smyth was our only other competitors on this leg where Taryn Keane had helpfully stepped in to fill a late withdrawal in our second team (Taryn would finish 26th on the leg).

Fiona Smyth celebrates at the finish line

After being beaten out late into 6th place last year – with Kilcoole’s Aubrey O’Neill chasing down and overtaking Grace Curham to leave us trailing by a few seconds only, this year the gap built late on and we had a big 12 minute buffer to nearest contenders DSD AC and 46 minutes down to the second Wicklow-based club (Kilcoole). Nine Wicklow-based teams competed in total.

How the teams fared versus prediction:

Glendalough Harried – predicted 8:31:25, actual 8:30:58 (27 seconds ahead)

Laragh Legends – predicted 9:34:15, actual 9:39:40 (5 minutes 35 seconds behind)

Wicklow Wolfpack – predicted 12:09:59, actual 11:03:25 (1 hour 6 minutes 34 seconds ahead!)

Race Report: Road Records, Welsh Ultras and Catcher Car

Another busy few weeks behind us with lots of racing and the first Saturday morning ‘Coffee Run’ organised for Wickow Wolf RC (pictured).

🛣️ Road Races

Another busy spell on the roads with a mixture of PBs, records and a few unusual adventures thrown in.

Aaron Cullen continues to completely rewrite parts of the club record book while Monica Timmins managed the unusual feat of racing ultras and half-marathons almost simultaneously. Meanwhile Eoin Phelan’s race count continues to rise at a rate that is becoming increasingly difficult to track accurately.

DUBLIN CITY HALF-MARATHON

A massive day for Aaron Cullen who continues what is rapidly becoming one of the strongest road seasons by a Glendalough runner in recent years.

Aaron’s 75:16 didn’t just break Torben Dahl’s long-standing club record of 78:33 but demolished it. It also removes Amidou Dembele’s senior men’s record of 83:22 and even surpasses Torben’s all-time best of 77:30 from his Crusaders days.

That now leaves Aaron sitting on 6 overall club records and 7 age-category records at the top of our records table.

Monica Timmins meanwhile backed up her ultra exploits in Wales with a half-marathon PB in the same race.

TERENURE 5 MILE

A very strong run from Gavin Kennedy here, taking over a minute and a half off his PB in a competitive field and finishing as 8th M45.

Jimmy Cullen wasn’t far outside his own best while Donna Quinn continued her return to form by taking more than 90 seconds off last year’s run. In doing so she also removes Aoife Joyce’s 2024 club record of 35:28: a mark she missed by just a second last year.

WINGS OF LIFE AND WARANDE PARKRUN

Tivon Tyner headed to the Netherlands for one of the more unusual race weekends on the calendar.

First came the windmill-shaped Warande ParkRun before the main event — the Wings for Life race where runners attempt to stay ahead of the “catcher car” for as long as possible. Tivon lasted 24.9 km and just over two hours before finally being reeled in.

For context, the worldwide winner managed a scarcely believable 78.9 km before being caught!

⛰️ Trail & Mountain Races

A heavy lean towards ultras and longer mountain races this time around with Wales proving particularly popular.

The trail side continues to show strong depth with multiple category podiums and large representation across races. Trooperstown in particular practically turned into a club outing with 11 runners in action.

Fiona Smyth took on her first 50k over in Wales and handled it in fine style.

A new course this year and strong representation from the club with six runners in action.

Graham Bushe continues his remarkably consistent season at the front end of races taking 2nd M55, while Brendan Lawlor and Richard Kieran gave us two more category podiums in the M60s.

TROOPERSTOWN AND CLARA VALE

This relatively new race is rapidly becoming one of the club favourites and we had no fewer than 11 runners out.

Huw Thomas led the charge with an excellent top-10 finish and 1st M35. Stephen Kennedy followed not far behind in 12th taking 2nd M40, while Christopher Shannon and Graham Bushe made it four Glendalough runners inside the top 20. Graham meanwhile added another M55 win to his collection.

Further back Anne Bromley and Alan Kennedy crossed only five seconds apart while Aoife Joyce beat David Gray by a single second in another neat club pairing.

A very busy month behind us with a score of trail races including an overall win for one of our women and no less than three new club records on the roads!

Road Races

A good spread of road racing over the last while, mostly centred around half marathons and shorter races, with a few stepping up to the marathon.

What stands out isn’t any one result but how a few of them line up: particularly Catherine Devitt hitting a PB and then backing it up shortly after with a marathon club record and Aaron Cullen decimating the men’s 10k record.

Bohermeen Half Marathon

Bohermeen as usual: quick course, but only if you get it right early. The Tyners, father and son, ran it sensibly together.

CPC Half Marathon

A stronger field than most and a good place to test yourself. Catherine secured a PB by about 30 seconds in her final preparations for Rotterdam lowering her own half-marathon club record too. Only five of the club’s male members hold faster PBs on this distance now than Catherine.

Wicklow Half Marathon

We had a good contingent out in the Wicklow Half and 10k once again and Eoin Phelan got to lead the team home this time around with only Sam Fleming taking on the 10k. Watch Eoin’s video on the race below.

Grace Curham’s 2nd senior finish looked like a breakthrough at the time and it turned out to be just that. Our first finishers, however, where Ian followed by wife Anne twenty places later and Stephen Kennedy in one of his first outings for our club. The Tyners once again paced the race together before Eoin Phelan, Julia Palma, James Heggie and new member Chad Biddle rounded out the field (in his first ultra).

One of the most scenic coastal routes on the island saw Wayne Earls getting through this one in solid fashion about midway through the field. The Causeway trail run was about 32.5 k with over 1000m climb.

MARATHON DES SABLES

And last but certainly not least, Ross Thompson took on the Marathon des Sables: a 250 km multi-day, self-sufficient stage race and about as far removed from a Sunday morning 10k as you can get. Finishing 891 out of over 1500 competitors in 59 hours – very impressive!

REPORT: Late February / Early March – racing bonanza! 4 mile records!

It has been another busy few weeks for Glendalough AC runners with members competing across road, trail and hill races both locally and internationally. Highlights included a trip to the Tokyo Marathon, podium finishes in Wicklow and several personal bests and club records at the Moneystown 4 Mile.

With the club championship now underway and the hill running season gathering pace, it has been an encouraging start to the racing year for the club.

Also a correction: in the last report we missed that Alan Kennedy had also competed in the Carrick Winter race finishing 3rd M55 – well done Alan!

ROAD RACES

Tokyo Marathon

Three Glendalough AC runners travelled to Japan to take part in the Tokyo Marathon, one of the prestigious World Marathon Majors.

Mark Lindsay led the club home in 3:27:21, with Graham Kearns and David Murphy also finishing strongly in the huge international field.

The race itself was won by Ethiopia’s Tadesse Takele in 2:03:37.

Graeme Warren led the Glendalough AC performances at the Wicklow Hospice Half Marathon, finishing 7th overall and 2nd in the M50 category.

John Conway and Ben Lewis also ran well in the competitive field while Jacques Becker represented the club in the 10km race.

The event continues to be one of the most popular charity races in the Wicklow road running calendar.

Gorey Night Run 5K

Donna Quinn and Colm Kenna represented the club at the Gorey Night Run 5K, another popular event on the road racing calendar.

Moneystown 4 Mile – Club Championship

Aaron Cullen delivered the standout performance of the day, finishing 6th overall in a new club record and personal best of 21:45.

There were further excellent age-category results with Graham Bushe winning the M55 category and Loraine Creane finishing 2nd F45, both setting new category club records.

The race also served as the second round of the club championship, with Graham Bushe and Loraine Creane now leading the standings.

Four Glendalough AC runners lined up at the Bohermeen Half Marathon, one of the fastest and most competitive half marathons on the Irish road racing calendar.

Angus Tyner led the club home with a strong run of 1:32:06, closely followed by Tivon Tyner just seconds behind.

Karen Croal and Aileen Duffy also completed the race for the club in what was another well-supported outing for Glendalough runners.

Brockagh Burst

Ian Bromley secured Glendalough AC’s best ever finish at the Brockagh Burst, placing 3rd overall and winning the M45 category on the new longer course.

The race also produced five age-category podium finishes for the club including wins for Graham Bushe (M55) and strong performances from Huw Thomas, Loraine Creane and Anne Bromley.

Nine Glendalough runners completed the long course while club coach René Borg also ran the short course alongside his son Cillian.

REPORT: Early February roads and hills…

Glendalough AC members were out in force across multiple distances and locations this past weekend, from Sligo to Texas. Highlights included debut 50k performances from Angus and Tivon Tyner at the National Championships in Donadea, with Angus setting new club records in both the overall and M55 categories. PBs were achieved by Louis Byrne and Christina Byrne at Rathcoffey, while Claire Thompson marked her return to 10k racing after a two-year absence with a strong run in Enniscorthy. The weekend’s racing ranged from the technical challenge of the IMRA Winter League at Carrick to the marathon distance in Austin, Texas, showcasing the club’s diverse racing ambitions.

Glendalough AC: Early Season Racing Highlights

The opening weeks of the season saw Glendalough AC members ease back into racing with a varied mix of hill, road, trail, and marathon events, combining steady returns, family-friendly outings, and some standout performances. From solid placings at the Pier Gates Remembrance Race and the MJ Bolton Memorial, to winter IMRA action at Ballyhoura, the early calendar also delivered notable milestones: Louis Byrne and Christina Byrne setting new club age-category records at Ferrycarrig, Aaron Cullen breaking a long-standing 5 km club record at the Coca Cola 5 km, and Monica Timmins opening her marathon account for the year with a Donadea PB.

PIER GATES REMEMBRANCE RACE

Last year’s racing season concluded for our members with the Pier Gates Remembrance hill race which was run on a course about 1 km shorter than the 2025 edition. Ian Bromley was our first man home with Kate Flynn next (and second FS) with Alan Kennedy next as the 3rd M55. It was also great to Huw Thomas back after long-term injury as he partook in the short race.

MJ BOLTON MEMORIAL RACE

The memorial 5 km for MJ Bolton has become the starting point for the racing calendar these last few years, and this year’s edition had a new (allegedly tougher) course with an uphill finish. Usually, taking more as a blow-out than a full on race, there was still a big field and fast times around the field although most of our participants took it easy with Aoife Joyce and Catherine Devitt running along with respective sons Cillian and Rowan.

This weekend’s roundup starts in Ballyhoura on 29th November where Becky Quinn was our lone competitor in the pre-AGM run over 16.7 km. Becky was 3rd woman and 1st F50 (she has now won the F50 category in 33 of her 34 races this year).

WATERFORD HALF-MARATHON

On the same day, a bit East, Eoin Phelan lined up next to nearly 600 other runners for the Waterford Half-marathon – his 52nd race of the season so far – where he ran a solid 1:42.

CLARA VALE VALE 3K , 5K AND 10K

Some hardy souls braved the torrential conditions and wet trails to support the fundraiser in Clara Vale: 20 people turned out for the 3k, 15 for the 5k and 46 for the 10k and we had a few good results including Yvonne Brennan winning the women’s 5k and Colm finishing 5th in the 10k while club coach Rene Borg ran with his son Cillian to finish 5th in the 3k. In total 8 of our runners turned out on the day.

JINGLE BELLS 5k

Despite nearly 2000 runners being out for the Jingle Bells 5k, we only had Nora Butler in the race and she ran a good 21:24 to finish 779th.

SHANGANAGH PARKRUN

Tivon Tyner set his 7th PB of the year – most having been lowering his 5k time sequentially – and this time he went under 20 minutes for the first time at the Shanganagh ParkRun.

REPORT: Gaelforce, Run the Line, Western Way, LSA 4 mile, Chicago Marathon

The club is on course for a record number of annual racers and November brought a good mix of hill, trail and road performances. After many months without reports, we pick up again with some later October and November results.

CHICAGO MARATHON

Let’s start by wishing Mark Lindsay a belated ‘well done’ on his Chicago Marathon. Mark became the second club runners to run in Chicago and his PB of 3:12:53 is the 15th fastest time on our all-time list and the fifth best this year.

As we go back in our records also a belated congratulations to our varies IMRA championship and league winners: Joe Lalor, Ian Bromley and Anne Bromley for winning the M70, M45 and F40 Leinster League categories, Becky Quinn for her wins in the IMRA Leinster and Connact Championships, and Graham Bush who won the M55 Leinster Championship and Joe Lalor who won the M70 category in both the Leinster and Irish Championship.

LSA 4 MILE

Staying with roads, Aaron Cullen continues his terrific season on the roads by claiming the club senior and overall 4 mile record with a time of 22:10.

CLANE 5K AND 10K

Angus Tyner has been on roll reducing first his 10k and marathon over-55 club records this Autumn and at the 5k in Clane his 18:56 took nearly 30 seconds off his previous record while son Tivon set a PB of 41:39. James Heggie finished out our representation with a solid 52:40.

TRAILS ROUND-UP

On the trails it has been a productive season with Becky Quinn winning the Leinster and Connacht Championships (finishing 2nd in the Irish Championship), Graham Bushe winning M55 category in the Leinster Championships with 2nd places in his category in the Irish Championship and Leinster League. Honourable mention must also go to Joe Lalor, Ian Bromley and Anne Bromley who won their age categories in the Leinster League (M70, M45 and F40 respectively).

Our members have recorded a stupendous 310 hill and 246 trail results this year – nearly 3/4 of all races run by our members.

WESTERN WAY

Becky Quinn secured her 27th individual or category win in 33 trail races this season at the Western Way 28 k races where Eoin Phelan brought his season tally to 50 – only 3 away from his all-time club record for races run in a season from 2024.

RUN THE LINE 11.6 AND 26K

Our usual good contingent at Run the Line was out with Paul Duffy leading us home with a time nearly 10 minutes faster than his previous best on the course. He was closely followed by Ian Bromley with Kate Flynn our first woman home. The two Kevin’s came in under the 3 hour mark and then Andy Walker.

Alan Kennedy was our sole competitor in the 11.6 km race.

ROTTERDAM MARATHON

Report pride of place goes to Catherine Devitt whose fantastic 3:01:39 marathon debut in Rotterdam knocked 13 minutes off Donna Quinn’s overall and F40 club records.

Brighton Marathon

Westport Marathons

Wind, sun and hills were on offer at the Westport marathon where Nora Butler ran well to secure 4th female spot overall on a day where the course record was lowered to 2:33 by Sean Hehir.

Inis Oirr 10 km

Tivon Tyner ran the Lee Road ParkRun with his father – long-term club member Angus Tyner – in 22:52 (Angus ran 20:10 for 3rd overall) and then headed over to run the very bump Inis Oirr 10 km race in 48:55 – a club best for men aged 18-19 years in our club.

STREETS OF KILKENNY 5K

The most recent result of our bunch where club secretary Donna Quinn had won tickets to the Streets of Kilkenny with daughter Lily (member of Parnell) to the Streets of Kilkenny 5k and ran a solid time while enjoying a night away!
