WINTER LEAGUE – Final Round

Today’ result and final tally. 16 runners competed and 9 got the minimum 6 to score. The final round saw a three way battle between Aoife, Flora and Rene for the win and the Sportsroom voucher!

The final round of the Winter League took part on the Brockagh Woods course with runners trying to best their handicaps against the 5k and 9.1 km courses.

The situation

Aoife Joyce only had to better her current results by 21 seconds in order to make it impossible for either Flora McKnight or Rene Borg to catch her. It proved neck on neck as both Rene and Aoife had recorded the maximum score for the last 4 races in a row and would do so again at the fifth asking.

Having run 29:41 and thus running off a 30 minute handicap, Aoife obliterated her time with 25:28. This made Rene’s time academical but he got some consolation by lowering Barry O’Neill’s course record of 42:55 to 42:07 and taking the win on the day. Flora could not improve her handicap and dropped from 2nd to 3rd in the overall with Rene taking second. It all came down to 21 seconds after 12 races!

League summary

The league was evenly contested for much of it with several winners: Barry O’Neill and Bruce Phillips won one race each, Aoife, Flora and Colm took two each and Rene won 4.

League 2019/20 – final standings

Notable achievements

This year’s league had four new course records: Donna Quinn and Aoife Joyce lowered the Roundwood 10k and 5k courses to 46:49 and 23:24 while Rene Borg lowered the long course times for Clara Vale and Brockagh Woods to 39:44 and 42:07.

People where adept at cracking their handicap breaking their times in 69 out of 106 attempts. Most of the 43 ‘failures’ – 15 – happened in the first two rounds as people were adjusting to their 2020 fitness levels!

League 2020/21

The league will return November 2020 but we will have other Saturday activities coming up for the rest of the year.

Next year’s league will feature and even tighter handicap system which should help keep the maximum number of people in contention for the longest period of time. We will also revisit bringing back the Pink Poulanass and Lower Lake Round courses to create a 16 round league.

Last week’s National Masters cross-country marked the end of the cross-country season for most of our runners. But the action continues…

Parkrun

Our weekend running began at 9 am in Avondale where Angus Tyner finished 6th in the ParkRun in 22:12. Not long after the smallest crowd yet assembled for our penultimate Winter League race (perhaps the weather deterred?) on the crown jewel of the six courses in the league: Clara Vale.

Winter League

The League has come down to a three-way battle between Aoife Joyce, Flora McKnight and coahc René Borg. All would have to better their handicap by 2 minutes or more to have a chance to stay in contention. Flora duly lowered her 29 minute handicap to 27 min and Aoife took her 30 minute mark down to 26 min. René had to improve his handicap of 42 minutes for the longer course to 40 minutes to stay within reach and just about scraped it with 39:44 – lowering Barry O’Neill’s course-record by 10 seconds in the process. All now comes down to Brockagh Woods next weekend where Aoife starts the day as the heavy favourite – her fate is in her own hands.

Enniscorthy 10 km

Aoife returned to Enniscorthy for the first time in 12 years looking to improve on her 46 minute mark set in Inch in July. Storm Dennis meant this task was a bit more onerous than expected but she still came home in a chip time of 44:48. Mission accomplished.

REPORT: Wicklow Novice XC 2019

After a one-year absence from Novice cross-country, we had a men’s team representing us last weekend for the county season opener in Roundwood. The men’s challenge was to run 6 x 1 km laps of a hilly field and combine the best four scorers in an attempt to win team medals.

Debutante Richard Costelloe had a storming run: going off boldly in the top half of the field and holding on for a fine 9th place. Behind him Barry O’Neill and René Borg packed for most of the race. Rene passed Barry on the 4th lap only to be repassed on the final half of the last lap. They finished 14th and 15th with 4 seconds between them. 

The last man is usually critical in cross-country and this proved the case again: Colm Kenna suffered a bit as the result of a too fast lap 1, but by toughing it out to the finish line he secured our silver medals. Had one of the two Bray Runners behind him not DNFed, we would likely have been consigned to the Bronze!

Kilcoole where run-away winners with 12 points (15 points clear of our crew) and the individual honours went to Inbhear Dee’s Robin Mooney.

This weekend another four-man team consisting of Anthony Breen, Barry O’Neill, Colm Kenna and René Borg will take on the Wicklow Intermediate in Avondale.

Weekend RACE UPDATES: Half Marathons and an Ultra!

Over the past weekend Glendalough AC had three runners competing in different Half Marathon distance races as well as one tackling a very steep ultra.

First in Dublin, Colm Kenna and William Belton raced the Half Marathon in Phoenix Park, the next step of the Dublin Race Series. Colm edged ahead with a finishing time of 1hr 47min, William followed up shortly after at 1hr 56min. The training continues as the Dublin Marathon now quickly approaches.

Meanwhile abroad Bruce Phillips participated in the Oslo Half Marathon. On a warm day in Norway, Bruce completed the hilly course (almost 200m vertical) in 1hr 48 mins.

Finally closer to home, Dave Lawless battled the awesome Ben Nevis Ultra marathon, an intimidating 52km race with over 4,000m of climbing. While he didn’t manage to complete the course (only 119 our of 335 actually did..), he ran 31km of tough terrain, with 2,200m of up, up up!

Congrats to all the runners for some inspiring efforts this weekend!

Looking forward we now have several athletes focusing on preparations for the Eco Trail Wicklow (Sept 28th) as well as the Dublin City Marathon (Oct 27th).

Weekend RACE UPDATES: Dublin Race Series 10 Mile & IMRA Sliabh Bui

We had several runners racing over the hot-weather August weekend, both on the Dublin roads and Wexford mountain trails.

Donna Quinn, Colm Kenna and William Belton competed at Phoenix Park for the Dublin Race Series 10 Mile. Donna finished the race in a time of 1:14.04, placing an impressive 12th out of 339 in her gender/age group. Not far behind, Colm finished the run in 1:24.16, and William followed up in 1:30.15. By all reports it was a hot day on the tarmac!

Meanwhile in Wexford Barry O’Neill ran the IMRA Sliabh Bui Southeast League race. This hilly course was a mix of single track, forest trail and fast fire roads, totalling just over 13km with 360m of climbs. No official results have yet been published, but Barry completed the course in a respectable time of 1:10.04.

BROCKAGH

First in action this week was Colm Kenna  – doing his warm-up for the Frank Duffy 10 km 4 days later on the slopes of Brockagh. Newcastle AC’s Luke McMullan’s win meant Northern honours prevailed on the race. Colm came home in 72:13 for 103rd place in a mid-size field of 162.

AYLING ABYSS

A ‘hang-over’ from last weeks result must also be mentioned as Torben Dahl took on the technical route up and down Djouce – dubbed the ‘Ayling’ Abyss after inventor Alan Ayling. Perhaps still feeling the Tucker Trail 80k in his legs Torben swooped across the finish line in 27th – a bit down on his usual placings in the league. The next day he could celebrate his 41st birthday – congratulations from everyone in Glendalough AC!

South Dublin 10k

Yesterday’s big Saturday fixture is the South Dublin 10k – part of the Dublin race series – where Richard Costelloe, Colm and William Belton were in action. Richard had a particularly good run setting a new PB of 41:50.

With three club runners in action, this race becomes an automatic counter in the club championship. Richard’s win here means he now leads the championship as although Torben Dahl and Barry O’Neill can still overtake him if they ‘win’ their ‘run in hand’.

NeverGiveUp 10k

Aoife Joyce capped off the weekend action in Inch at the NeverGiveUp 10k, her first race on the distance for nearly 6 years. Her time of 46:06 sufficed in securing third lady’s spot and 2nd F40.

REPORT; Wicklow Road Championship 2019

While our seven representatives at the Wicklow Road Championship this year was our smallest contingent yet, they still brought home two individual and two team medals.

Rachel Wisdom and Donna Quinn took 1st and 2nd in the ladies O35 category and combined with Aoife Joyce, back for her first race in 4 years, to take the team gold in the women’s masters o35-49 category.

Due to injury and late drop-offs we only fielded one men’s team: a masters team and not a senior team as well as in previous years. Here Torben Dahl was first home in 17:52 followed by Barry O’Neill and Richard Costelloe who arrived close together and Colm Kenna as the fourth man to count.

Also a big thank you to the organisers and to our own volunteers who stepped up: Yvonne Brennan and Angus Tyner.

REPORT: Scarr

Barry O’Neill and Colm Kenna took to the wet windswept flanks of Scarr yesterday for the latest instalment of the IMRA Leinster League. Barry O’Neill swept home in 22nd place – his best finish in the IMRA Leinster League confirming his improved hill form this year.

Colm Kenna was also in action once again and finished 114th.

REPORT: Devil’s in the Glen

The final chance to make a claim for our Wicklow Way Relay team was had in the Devil’s Glen where a new and faster course was inaugurated. Torben Dahl – already preselected – underlined his credentials finishing 10th as our first man across the line.

Barry O’Neill had another stomping run to finish 22nd and he was followed by Richard Costelloe in 34th and Colm Kenna in 98th. 136 runners competed. One round of the Trail League remains and Torben sits in 8th with Barry O’Neill joint-14th.
