RACE REPORTS: ‘Monster’ Half and Run the Line

We have had a gap in our reporting since August but our members have not been idle: before this weekend, they had raced 139 times since then, setting 8 new personal bests on roads. We’ll do a big ‘catch-up’ on this shortly.

MONSTER HALF-MARATHON (DEN HAAG)

These races featured new club records for the women’s section (by Donna Quinn – more on this in our ‘catch-up’) but this weekend Catherine Devitt lowered the half-marathon record once again with her 1:31:30 finish on in the Monster Half-marathon in The Hague (half of it run on hard-packed sand!).

Catherine’s result was also an all-time best for our women in the F40 category.

In Run the Line, our club had it’s greatest single day turn-out with 18 runners competing in the 11.5 and 26 km courses. This was in large degree due our new members from the Wicklow Wolf Running Club side which has seen 46 new runners joining this ‘club within the club’ at Glendalough AC in 2022.

RACE REPORTS: Bursting at Brockagh, Ballyhoura and belated xc results….

BURSTING UP BROCKAGH?

We begin with yesterday’s news.

On a windy day in Brockagh Woods anyone who wanted to record a good ‘percentage of winners time’ was to be disappointed as the top-3 swept home under the existing course record with Barry McEvoy taking nearly 3 minutes off Des Kennedy’s mark. The course was slightly shorter than in some previous iterations with the corner being cut West of Brockagh East and no return journey over Brockagh South-East – but the record was comprehensive enough that it can stand on its own as ‘undisputed’. The Brockagh East course has gone through small variations from year to year but what never changes is the relentless fire-road and the merciless grassy bank on the uphill. Such was the standard that the winner from Howth two weeks previous – Mark Snitch – was relegated to 4th place here.

For our club we had one of the best turn-outs at a hill race with eight runners competing and for the second week running, we got someone into the top-20 with Aran copying Torben’s 19th place finish from Howth. Club coach Rene was 2nd club man across the line with new members Diarmuid and Brian 4th and 5th before Loraine Creane came in finishing 7th woman on the day. Next was Richard, Colm and Keith. For Brian Lydon and Diarmuid Kavanagh the race marked their debut for our club.

158 runners competed and Wicklow clubs were well represented.

ANGUS ON THE MONEY AT THE PARKRUNS

Angus Tyner fits in a few ParkRuns between his orienteering commitments and with great results with two back to back 18:46 run-outs first at the Wexford Race course Parkrun and then at Shanganagh. In both race she secured 3rd place and first over 50.

HOWTH WINTER

Torben Dahl and Richard Kieran had kicked off this year’s Winter/Spring League at Howth Winter finishing 19th and 72nd out of 156 runners with Richard snatching first prize in the M55 category.

BALLYHOURA MOONLIGHT CHALLENGE

Moving back two weeks on Friday evening Johnny Conway lined up for the Ballyhoura Moonlight Challenge – a 28 km trail run in the dark where he equitted himself well and finished 22nd.

Another busy period comes to an end with our runners competing in such diverse events as Stone Cross to Lug, the Roundwood Reservoir 10k and the Lakes 10 km last weekend.

LAKES 10 KM

It was a fruitful day at the Lakes 10 km in Blessington. Donna Quinn bagged a new personal best while Aoife Joyce got a master’s PB in the over-40 category which was also the second fastest time run by one of our ladies while members of the club.

Richard Costelloe was our first man home with 39:38 and while it was not a PB, it was still his second fastest time run with Glendalough AC.

Our ladies packed particularly well finishing 4th, 5th and 6th as well as taking 2nd and 3rd in the F40 category and 3rd in the FS category. Claire ran her fastest time since 2017.

It was also a good day for Colm Kenna who ran his fastest 10 km since 2016 and an over-40 PB.

ROUNDWOOD 10K

On Sunday Paul Duffy changed his planned run-out in the Lakes to instead do the local Roundwood 10k on the trails around the reservoir and for the first time banked a ’10k time’ along with a fine 12th place finish out of 166.

STONE CROSS TO LUG

Barry O’Neill in Stone Cross to Lug

Far from the glitz and glamour of the roads and trails, Barry O’Neill carved out the run of the weekend in some of the most desolate and boggy stretches of the West Wicklow mountains as he took on the 54 km from Stone Cross to Fenton’s Pub beneath Lugnacoille – a sojourn featuring 2170m climbing and some of the hardest underfoot you are likely to meet in these parts.

Only 16 hardy souls even dared attempt it and Barry secured a sub-9 hour finish and 12th spot overall before doubling up with a bottle of MacArdles from the boot and a pint chaser in Fenton’s.

CLUB OPEN CHAMPIONSHIPS

This week concluded with 8 of our runners competing in the 9th round of the Club Open Championships – this time a 4 km cross-country race in Avondale. Here Barry O’Neill showed no tiredness as he cruised home first. Angus Tyner continues to lead the overall series ahead of the last three rounds.

Last week’s National Masters cross-country marked the end of the cross-country season for most of our runners. But the action continues…

Parkrun

Our weekend running began at 9 am in Avondale where Angus Tyner finished 6th in the ParkRun in 22:12. Not long after the smallest crowd yet assembled for our penultimate Winter League race (perhaps the weather deterred?) on the crown jewel of the six courses in the league: Clara Vale.

Winter League

The League has come down to a three-way battle between Aoife Joyce, Flora McKnight and coahc René Borg. All would have to better their handicap by 2 minutes or more to have a chance to stay in contention. Flora duly lowered her 29 minute handicap to 27 min and Aoife took her 30 minute mark down to 26 min. René had to improve his handicap of 42 minutes for the longer course to 40 minutes to stay within reach and just about scraped it with 39:44 – lowering Barry O’Neill’s course-record by 10 seconds in the process. All now comes down to Brockagh Woods next weekend where Aoife starts the day as the heavy favourite – her fate is in her own hands.

Enniscorthy 10 km

Aoife returned to Enniscorthy for the first time in 12 years looking to improve on her 46 minute mark set in Inch in July. Storm Dennis meant this task was a bit more onerous than expected but she still came home in a chip time of 44:48. Mission accomplished.

REPORT: Dublin Marathon 2019

Donna Quinn took full advantage of the perfect Dublin conditions to knock nearly 13 minutes off her marathon PB to record 3:27:25 and finish 66th in her age category. This is a new club record for the ladies section of our club  – so well done Donna, tremendous reward for your hard work and commitment to your training.

Not to be completely outshone in the local household, husband William Belton had his marathon debut, always a tricky proposition, and came home in 4:09:32. Enjoy the recuperation in the Belton/Quinn household!

Weekend RACE UPDATES: Dublin Race Series 10 Mile & IMRA Sliabh Bui

We had several runners racing over the hot-weather August weekend, both on the Dublin roads and Wexford mountain trails.

Donna Quinn, Colm Kenna and William Belton competed at Phoenix Park for the Dublin Race Series 10 Mile. Donna finished the race in a time of 1:14.04, placing an impressive 12th out of 339 in her gender/age group. Not far behind, Colm finished the run in 1:24.16, and William followed up in 1:30.15. By all reports it was a hot day on the tarmac!

Meanwhile in Wexford Barry O’Neill ran the IMRA Sliabh Bui Southeast League race. This hilly course was a mix of single track, forest trail and fast fire roads, totalling just over 13km with 360m of climbs. No official results have yet been published, but Barry completed the course in a respectable time of 1:10.04.

MORE RACE UPDATES: Blaney 10 Mile and Malahide Castle 10k

We missed a few results in our round-up from yesterday. We stated (wrongly) that our runners did the South Dublin 10k this weekend but it was in fact the weekend prior. This weekend Donna Quinn was in action in Monaghan running the Blaney 10 mile and finishing 1st F35 in 71 minutes – her third best mark over the distance.

Richard Costelloe bagged himself a second 10k PB within a week at the Malahide Castle 10k, finishing in 14th place and lowering his time by 19 seconds to 41:31.

Lots of action last week for our runners.

BROCKAGH

First in action this week was Colm Kenna  – doing his warm-up for the Frank Duffy 10 km 4 days later on the slopes of Brockagh. Newcastle AC’s Luke McMullan’s win meant Northern honours prevailed on the race. Colm came home in 72:13 for 103rd place in a mid-size field of 162.

AYLING ABYSS

A ‘hang-over’ from last weeks result must also be mentioned as Torben Dahl took on the technical route up and down Djouce – dubbed the ‘Ayling’ Abyss after inventor Alan Ayling. Perhaps still feeling the Tucker Trail 80k in his legs Torben swooped across the finish line in 27th – a bit down on his usual placings in the league. The next day he could celebrate his 41st birthday – congratulations from everyone in Glendalough AC!

South Dublin 10k

Yesterday’s big Saturday fixture is the South Dublin 10k – part of the Dublin race series – where Richard Costelloe, Colm and William Belton were in action. Richard had a particularly good run setting a new PB of 41:50.

With three club runners in action, this race becomes an automatic counter in the club championship. Richard’s win here means he now leads the championship as although Torben Dahl and Barry O’Neill can still overtake him if they ‘win’ their ‘run in hand’.

NeverGiveUp 10k

Aoife Joyce capped off the weekend action in Inch at the NeverGiveUp 10k, her first race on the distance for nearly 6 years. Her time of 46:06 sufficed in securing third lady’s spot and 2nd F40.

REPORT; Wicklow Road Championship 2019

While our seven representatives at the Wicklow Road Championship this year was our smallest contingent yet, they still brought home two individual and two team medals.

Rachel Wisdom and Donna Quinn took 1st and 2nd in the ladies O35 category and combined with Aoife Joyce, back for her first race in 4 years, to take the team gold in the women’s masters o35-49 category.

Due to injury and late drop-offs we only fielded one men’s team: a masters team and not a senior team as well as in previous years. Here Torben Dahl was first home in 17:52 followed by Barry O’Neill and Richard Costelloe who arrived close together and Colm Kenna as the fourth man to count.

Also a big thank you to the organisers and to our own volunteers who stepped up: Yvonne Brennan and Angus Tyner.
